After the bus drops us off at the Goat Island carpark, our walk begins on the official Cape Rodney walkway. We pass the University’s marine lab and the Discovery Centre and take our first uphill climb to the ridge. Enjoy amazing views from Aotea (Great Barrier) all the way to Whangarei Heads and beyond, and also enjoy the gorgeous blue/greens of the crystal-clear water below.
Following the ridgeline, we wind through beautiful native bush and peeks of the marine reserve below, before popping out at the end of the official walkway for our first snack stop. Once again, we are surrounded by beautiful views of the marine reserve and outer Hauraki Gulf.
We cross into private land to access, via an uphill trek, the high point of Cape Rodney with more spectacular views. Following the local road, mainly downhill, we take in views across Leigh and Omaha before entering native bush for a walk around picturesque Leigh Harbour. There is a steep set of stairs at the end of this leg, then a short trip through Leigh village, culminating in a restorative beer, wine or coffee and pizza at the Leigh Sawmill Café. Yummy!
