A new name for an old favourite – the walk to Big Bay.
The walk south from Martins Bay to Big Bay is a varied and beautiful track, approximately 12km there and back. (Bring some cash with you so you can purchase some of the home-grown macadamias from our hosts, Tony and Dianne Niccolls. They are fresh, delicious and good fuel for the walk.)
The trail meanders from the harbour side of the peninsula to the ocean side and takes in gorgeous views across Mahurangi Harbour, Warkworth, Kawau Bay and it’s many islands, and even the distant Auckland City. You’ll see the Mahurangi area from many new and inspiring angles.
On arrival at Big Bay, you can stroll the deserted, Pohutukawa lined beach and enjoy your packed lunch on the shady verandah of the isolated bach near the beach, or doze on the grass beneath the trees and listen to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Bring your togs if you are in the mood for a spring swim.
After soaking up the beauty of Big Bay, we’ll walk back to the bus, enjoying a small detour or two, taking in all the glorious views. On completion of the walk, the bus will return us to Warkworth where you can enjoy a restorative beverage at one of the town’s delightful bars or cafes.
This is a truly memorable walk over private land that is just not accessible at any other time. Every walker who has been on this trail has been astounded by the beauty of the location. There are some steep up-hills and down-dales so be prepared to work up a sweat. It is a Grade 5 walk and should only be undertaken if you are fit and have good walking shoes. You’ll need plenty of water and extra snacks aside from the boxed lunch provided. We can’t wait to guide you on this walk because it’s a stunner!
