What better way could there be to spend a Sunday than strolling through the beautiful backblocks of Matakana, visiting growers, sampling wine and cider, and eating delicious local produce while taking in stunning views of Omaha Bay and surrounds.
We will begin this walk with a coffee (if you need one) at the Morris & James Cafe before making our way up the road to Hyperion Wines. John Crone will meet us and introduce us to his amazing wines and we will get to taste some of his latest vintage.
Then we will meander through the vines and up through John's paddocks to Takatu Vineyard, at the top of the ridge. There we will meet John Petersen who will introduce us to their wines and lodge, and we will taste the latest from their vineyard.
From Takatu Vineyard, we will stroll north to Omaha Bay Vineyard to meet Hegman Foster and sample his wines. We will also sit down for lunch here and enjoy the delicious OBV platters. Eat, sip and enjoy the expansive views out over Omaha Bay – glorious!
Finally, in order to walk off your lunch and stretch those legs one more time, we'll make our way down the walk/bike trail to Omaha flats and Jones Road Cider. Here, Lesley Lindesay will tell us about setting up their heritage apple orchard and how they came to be cider makers. We'll sample the award-winning Jones Road Cider and relax in their orchard while we wait for the bus to pick us up.
You can purchase wine and cider at the respective stops and we will organise for your purchases to be delivered to the bus at Jones Road – no need to carry what you buy.
This is a remodelled version of a walk we have run previously and it always sells out quickly so make sure you get some friends together for this excellent adventure.
