Te Muri Discovery
November, 9:15am. Duration: 6.5 hours.
$38 - includes bus transport, lunch platters at Ransom vineyard.
Limited to 36
This walk gives you the opportunity to discover the stunning bays and headlands of the Mahurangi, along with commanding views of the Hauraki Gulf. The area is rich in Maori and early settler history, evidence of which can be seen as we walk.
The walk begins at Tungutu Point where there is clear evidence of kumara pits and from here is a great place to take photos. We will then meander down through regenerating native bush to Sullivans Bay, then up to Cudlip Point before descending to cross the Te Muri stream. You will get a bit wet crossing the stream so bring a towel if you need to dry your feet.
We will stop on the other side and have a look at the historic cemetery where there are local Maori and early settler graves. We then follow the estuary inland and climb to the trig from where you can see the Coromandel and Great Barrier Island on a clear day.
After that, it's all down hill to the beach and back across the stream to catch the bus back to Ransom winery for a well-deserved wine and platter lunch.
This walk has great variety, beaches, headlands, bush, stunning vistas and of course a wonderful Ransom platter to top it off.
