Welcome to Auckland Council’s new and improved Mahurangi East regional park. The extension to Mahurangi East regional park is not officially open yet so this is the perfect time to come and check it out before it gets “discovered”. The park is still only accessible by water at this point in time, unless you come with Warkworth Walks and enjoy our privileged access through private farmland.
The walk south from Martins Bay to Big Bay is a varied and beautiful track, approximately 12km there and back. The peninsula trail meanders from harbour side to ocean side and takes in gorgeous views across Mahurangi Harbour, Warkworth, Kawau Bay with its many islands, and even the distant Auckland City. See the Mahurangi area from many new and inspiring angles. We’ll introduce you to some of the history of the peninsula as we go and take time for a morning tea break at a pretty bay.
At Big Bay, you can stroll the deserted, pohutukawa-lined beach, and enjoy your lunch on the grass beneath the trees, listening to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Bring your togs for a spring swim.
After soaking up the beauty of Big Bay, we’ll walk back to the bus, enjoying a detour or two, taking in all the glorious views. On completion of the walk, the bus will return us to Warkworth where you can enjoy a restorative beverage at one of the town’s delightful bars or cafes.
This is a truly memorable walk over a new section of the park that has only just come into public ownership and private farmland. Warkworth Walks has always supported the wish of the landowners for the farm to become a regional park and it is a total delight to have seen that happen. Every walker who has been on this trail has been astounded by the beauty of the location.
There are some steep up-hills and down-dales so be prepared to work up a sweat. It is a Grade 5 walk and should only be undertaken if you are very fit and have good walking shoes. You’ll need plenty of water, snacks and BYO lunch. We can’t wait to guide you on this walk because it’s a stunner!
