Grade 5

This is a walk with lots of different terrain and stunning views. Starting at the west end of Moirs Hill Road, we walk along Waihunga/Moirs Hill reserve track to the western lookout point and 270 degree views over Kaipara and south to Auckland and Coromandel. After a snack and drink, we retrace our steps to Moirs Hill Rd and walk along the road for a short time, joining up with the Te Araroa Trail.

Following a 25 minute bush walk we arrive at the Ahuroa Rd/J. Tolhopf Rd intersection. Some history of the Bohemian settlement in the Puhoi district will be provided at this point. We then cross the road and pass through a rural subdivision, over an old airstrip, then towards the top we enter Dunn’s Bush ridge track. This is a stunning piece of native bush lovingly restored by the late Arthur Dunn.

Emerging from Dunn’s Bush at Sugarloaf high point, we will break for our lunch and a photo opportunity overlooking the wider Puhoi area and out towards the Hauraki Gulf islands. Continuing on through a farm track, we arrive at Reminger Rd/Ahuroa Rd intersection where the bus will collect us to take us to Puhoi township.

Here there will be 2 options:
A) a short walk through Puhoi Domain and up Puhoi Lookout track for views across the township, or
B) head to the Puhoi Pub for a well earned drink! (Not included in the cost so bring your wallet :-)

After approximately 1 hour at Puhoi, we board the bus again and return to Warkworth home base.

This is a Grade 5 walk so you need to be fit and have good strong footwear. Walking poles are recommended as the trail can be slippery underfoot.
