Join us for this delightful undiscovered day walk, not inluded in any guide book. Only possible at low tide, the length of the walk has sweeping views across to the Hen and Chicken Islands. You may have driven past this amazing stretch of coast but you can’t really see it from the road, and few people actually get to walk it. Half the trail borders one of the world’s oldest and best known marine reserves, and the other half takes in the glorious of white sands of Pakiri beach.

Lunch is later so bring plenty of snacks plus water, hat, layers, and the usual things you would pack for a day hike. Bring your togs for a swim.

Starting at Goat Island beach we head north. Walking along the grey shore line is a good warm up for leg muscles, then we move onto the boulders. We will navigate our way along this rock path. There won’t be a rush, and we will take care when there are slippery patches. There will be opportunities to investigate tidal pools once we get onto the rocks.

Our salty route is bordered by the soaring hillscape on one side and sweeping ocean views the other. Morning tea will be at on the rocks along the way.

We finish at Pakiri Beach – a popular place for swimmers and surfers. North of Auckland, this is one of the first truly open ocean east coast beaches. If the sun is out, it will be time for another break under the pohutukawas. Weather permitting, pack your togs for a dip.

Then it’s just a short bus ride up to pizzas for lunch around 2 o’clock at the legendary Leigh Sawmill Cafe.

Most of this walk is over rocks which can be wobbly and/or slippery so please be prepared for this. There are a couple of awkward spots which need care. Poles are highly recommended. It is a late lunch so bring enough snacks/drinks to keep you going.
